Education is the key to the future for children and youth that have faced challenges in their younger years. The Children's Aid Society works together with children, biological and foster families to help children in care reach their full potential through the elementary, secondary and post-secondary school systems. Education programs give children the chance to pursue their dreams and build a successful life.
Our objectives are:
To support children and youth in the care of the Children's Aid Society in their learning and educational progress;
Provide children the opportunity to better their educational development and enhance their learning experiences, self-esteem and confidence;
Provide individual support for children's learning needs and goals;
Create positive learning environments and opportunities where participants are encouraged to reach their full potential.
We do this by providing funding for:
Scholarships & Bursaries
Bright Future Scholarships & Bursaries represent an affirmation not only of a young person's scholastic ability, but also of his or her determination to succeed in the face of hardship. This funding is made available to assist with tuition and books for post-secondary education at college, university, or other post-secondary training facility.
Volunteer Tutoring
The Tutoring Program is currently in its sixth year of operation. Volunteer tutors work on a one-to-one basis with children for one hour a week. Utilizing the services of a tutor in a safe, non-judgmental atmosphere addresses each child's special learning needs.
Graduation Recognition
Graduation gifts are provided for youth graduating from high school and post secondary education and who are or were in the care of the Children's Aid Society. Knowing there is a cash reward often provides the incentive required for some of our youth to obtain those last few credits to graduate. A high school, college, trade or university certificate or diploma can assist these youth in reaching their full potential and becoming contributing members of society.
Life Skill Group Sessions
Growing up and leaving home is a part of life for everyone. But most youth have parents, extended family or other role models to help them make the transition from dependent to independent living. This Group provides basic instruction and reinforcement of skills in the areas of relationships, nutrition, tenancy, and self-care to youth leaving foster care and embarking on independent community living.
