Simcoe County Children's Aid Society in the News

Feb. 21, 2003 -- Province conducting Operational Review

The Simcoe County Children's Aid Society is undergoing an operational Review over the next few weeks. The review is an attempt by government to understand why child welfare has had such a large increase in spending over the past five years and the difficulties agencies are having keeping within the provincial child welfare Funding Framework.

The Ministry of Family and Children's Services, the funding body responsible for Children's Aid Societies in the province, will conduct the Review. The local CAS is one of two societies involved in an Operational Review at this time. The Simcoe County CAS is one of 52 of the 54 Ontario Children's Aid Societies currently facing a deficit this year.

In the past five years the field of child welfare across the province has undergone many changes, ranging from changes in legislation to changes in regulations, to changes in how Agencies are funded. It is hoped that some of the recommendations coming out of the review may be able to be applied to other CASs facing similar issues.

"We welcome the opportunity to work with the Ministry to explore our funding issues. Although we know we provide quality, cost effective service to the community, there are always things we can do to improve," said Mary Ballantyne, Executive Director for the CAS of Simcoe County. "Anything more we can do to make sure the children of Simcoe County are well served is a good thing."
