Parenting is not easy. Anyone who has cared for a child knows it is a big responsibility. Even in the best of circumstances it takes time, energy, patience and support. When these are at a premium it can be a tough,
demanding job that can strain family relationships and lead to a crisis. Even though parents may love their
children and want only the best for them, the stress can sometimes become too much. If parents are further
burdened by financial problems, legal difficulties or a major illness in the family, the ability to cope in a healthy
way breaks down, and can lead to the abuse or neglect of vulnerable children.
When this occurs it is the responsibility of the Children's Aid Society to intervene. We will work with the family to
help resolve the difficulties that brought them to our door, and strengthen their relationships so they are able to
parent their children safely. Working with our community we will connect families with other programs and services
that can help. Keeping families together is our most important goal. When this is not possible we then provide
quality alternative care if necessary.
If you suspect a child is being abused or neglected it is your legal duty to report the situation to a Children's Aid Society.
