• When? Thursday, April 26, May 3, 10, 17, 2001 - 9:30 am - 3:00 pm

• Where? Board Rooms B & C at 60 Bell Farm

• Who? Foster and adoptive parents, staff and volunteers who work with families and children who present with challenging behaviour

• Facilitators: Sue Walten, Agency Treatment Foster Parent and past president of the Learning Disabilities Association of Huronia. Sue has also presented a parenting course at Georgian College for families living with the challenges of raising a child with learning disabilities.

• Why? Do any of these labels sound familiar to you? "Stupid!", "hyper"," impulsive", "weird!" "clumsy", "inappropriate", "out of control", "aggressive", "angry", "defiant", "space cadet!", "retard!". This session will help you understand the behaviours behind the labels. Sue will provide a wealth of up to date ideas on how children process information. Is it possible we aren't "getting through to them"?

  Sue will have you look at: how we learn; how we are smart vs. how smart are we; diagnoses, labels and behaviours; and learning disabilities. You will be looking at the reasons for behaviours as well as social skills, structuring, natural and logical consequences.

  Sue will be using handouts, videos, discussion groups, role play, experiential learning and sharing. Bring your experience to this course and share.
