• When? Monday, June 11, Thursday, June 14, 21, 2001 - 9:30 am - 3:00 pm

• Where? Board Rooms B & C at Bell Farm

• Who? All Foster Parents who have not taken this CORE training Volunteers and Adoptive Parents are welcome.

• Facilitator: Flo Skrypnychuk (Foster Care Resource Social Worker & Trainer) & Joy Leslie (Ontario Foster Parent of the year 1997 and agency trainer)

• Why? This is CORE training for Foster parents. The children who come to the attention of the agency have experienced abuse and/or neglect as a part of their lives. How that impacts children at different developmental stages in their lives and what can be done to help them heal are important to understand. Children's behaviour is often a concern. Children who have experienced abuse and neglect often act out their feelings of anger, fear, low self-esteem and stress.

  Knowing how to recognize what might be causing the behaviour and having tips and techniques to deal with it are important not only for the child but for the Foster family who want to help rather than continue the harm that children have experienced. Understanding how children perceive the world can assist Foster families in building in rules for being safe and comfortable, that may prevent misunderstandings that can lead to allegations of abuse by a child who misunderstands what is happening in the Foster home.

  This session might be a good companion to the module on Safeguarding Children and Families from Abuse.
